Facts of IPv6

IPv4 - 4 Octet which provide approximately 4.3 billion address

IPv6 - 16 Octets with 128 bit binary value and display 32 Hexadecimal digits,
            it provide approximately 3.4 x 10^38 IP

IPv6 Advantages:

1) Mobility and Security
2) Simpler Header
3) Larger Address Space
4) Transition Richness

IPv6 Address Types:
  1. Unicast
  2. Multicast
  3. Anycast
1 Unicast -    Unicast send packets to one specific device with one specific address.

2 Multicast - Multicast send a packet to every member of a group.

3 Anycast -  Anycast send a packet to any one member of the group devices with anycast address assigned.

IPv6 Over Datalink Layers protocols:

- PPP
- FDDI
- HDLC
- ATM
- Frame Relay
- IEEE 1394
- Token Ring
- Ethernet
- ARCNET (Attached resource computer network)
- NBMA (Non broadcast multi access)

Assigning IPv6 Address:
  1. Static Assignment
  • Manual Interface ID Assignment
  • EUI - 64 Interface ID Assignment
     2  Dynamic Assignment
  • Stateless Autoconfiguration (DHCP Lite)
  • DHCPv6 (Stateful)

Strategies for Implementing IPv6

1) Dual Stack
Dual Stack is an integration method in which a node has implementation and connectivity to both an IPv4 and IPv6 network.

2) Tunneling

(A) Manual IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling
In this method IPv6 packet is encapsulated within the IPv4 protocol.

(B) Dynamic 6 to 4 tunneling
It automatically establish the connection of IPv6 island through an IPv4 network. It applied a valid and             unique IPv6 prefix to each IPv6 in corporate network without address retrival from the ISPs.

(C) Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol Tunneling (ISATAP)
ISATAP tunnels allow individual IPv4 or IPv6 dual stack hosts within a site to communicate with other host on a virtual link.

(D) Teredo Tunneling
It is used to pass unicast IPv6 traffic when dual stacked hosts are located behind one or multiple IPv4 network address translator.

3) Proxing and Translation
The job of the translator is to translate IPv6 packets into IPv4 packets and vice versa.
